In conjunction with Punch Records and the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) I was commissioned to write 20 creative audio description pieces to promote access to the arts for Blind and partially sighted people. The audio descriptions were for images from Vanley Burke’s exhibition ‘By The Rivers of Birmingham’ which was displayed at the MAC in Birmingham and will tour the UK later this year.
It was interesting to find that that both blind and partially sighted people and seeing people were interested and enjoyed hearing the audio when visiting the exhibition. For those with visual impairments the descriptions enabled them to imagine the image and for listeners who could see expressed enjoyment of another perspective stating that they would have missed things from the image with the absence of the spoken word.
