How is spoken word poetry different to traditional poetry?
A simple answer is that spoken word poetry and traditional poetry are created using the same writing devices and methods, however spoken word poetry is different in the sense that it is usually written for the purpose of a stage performance and with an audience in mind. If you were to imagine reading a story or even an anthology of poetry from a book aloud on stage, the experience may be drawn out for some audience members. For this reason spoken word poems usually last around 3 minutes and are filled with quirky metaphors to keep audience members engaged.
I have a presentation to do at school; can I use lines from your poems in my presentation?
By all means please do – have no problem with this as long as you mention the original author in your work 😉
How can I engage my students with poetry?
To my knowledge you have two options in this situation: 1) Book one of my workshops, or 2) search the web – there are hundreds if not thousands of forums, creative blogs and organisations that offer helpful tips on how to spark an interest in poetry.
What does it mean to be an entrepreneur?
From my experience the meaning of the word ‘entrepreneur’ is highly subjective. The majority of people would probably think of Sir Alan Sugar or Richard Branson obviously equating the meaning with making money. However, I have seen children in primary school do entrepreneurial deeds such as writing to local business owners challenging them to match funds their class has raised for a charity or college students who set up small businesses in their college whilst they study to gain work experience. So from my perspective it’s not just about making money or being a leader or inventing the next new fad; to me it’s about making a ‘positive difference’ to a situation, environment or your own or other peoples’ lives.
Why do you call yourself EVOKE?
Simply put it is my stage name. The word, EVOKE, actually means to ‘call up or produce memories and feelings or suggest through artistry and imagination a vivid impression of reality’. I like this description and I think it describes exactly what I try to do as a spoken word artist.
How long would a typical workshop or creative project last?
Workshops can last anywhere between 10 minutes up to several hours. Projects can vary between days, weeks, months or years. The timeframe is usually dependent on two factors: What you hope to achieve and your budget. Because OUTABOX provides tailor-made workshops and services it is difficult to give a definitive answer, so it is best to get in contact for your individual needs and requirements. However it may be useful to check out previous workshops and projects on the OUTABOX time line to get a feel for what can be accomplished within certain time frames.
